Under this treatment, the patient is given medication that will identify and destroy cells in accelerated proliferation, managing to interrupt or inhibit the growth of cancerous cells. However, treatment by chemotherapy is also likely to damage healthy cells that normally have a fast-rate growth, like those lining the inside of the mouth (causing canker sores) and the intestine (causing diarrhea) and those responsible for hair growth (leading to hair loss). The damage to those cells cause adverse effects that disappear after the treatment with chemotherapy.
